Beat the heat with PRFM + ice cream

This week at PRFM...

Stroll the market with a nice iced beverage in hand (coffee or freshly made soda, perhaps?), learn something at The Lexicon of Sustainability tent, and bring the kids for story time at the Your Happy Nest tent (hear Waiting for Wings at 9:00 a.m. and make butterfly-themed art, celebrating beneficial bugs and pollinators). Then grab a seat for the 10:00 a.m. chef demo with Suzanne Vizethann, a Food Network CHOPPED champion and chef/owner of Buttermilk Kitchen. Stick around and reward yourself for shopping local by indulging in seasonally inspired ice cream courtesy of nearly 30 chefs participating in the Slow Food Atlanta Ice Cream Social (details below).

Chef Demo
with Angus Brown of Lusca
10:00 a.m. on 6/6
Chef Demos are sponsored by
Piedmont Hospital
After making an indelible mark on the industry with Octopus Bar, a celebrated post-shift spot among our city's chefs, Angus Brown's newest concept was one of the most highly anticipated openings last year. And rightly so. Lusca has since been named as a semifinalist for the James Beard Foundation's Best New Restaurant category, included in GQ's list of "America's 25 Outstanding Restaurants," and listed in bon appetit's "America's 50 Best New Restaurants." Angus was also named one of Cooking Light's "Trailblazing Chefs" and was nominated for Food & Wine's "People's Best New Chef." He's trained in French, Italian, and Asian cuisine, and has researched and cooked his way through Japan and Vietnam. Lucky for us, he's settled in his hometown of Atlanta, where he's committed to using local ingredients and serves on the chef advisory board of Atlanta's Community Farmers Markets. You won't want to miss this Saturday's demo with one of our city's most creative chefs!

Chef Demo with Nick Leahy
of Saltyard
10:00 a.m. on 5/17
Chef Demos are sponsored by
COUNTRY Financial
Chef Nick Leahy is one worldly chef. He was born in Bermuda and grew up in England before moving to Atlanta in elementary school. With a mother who's half-French, he was exposed early on to delicacies like duck confit and knew even then that he wanted to be a chef. His culinary career has included stints at Food Studio, Two Urban Licks, Stats, and Parish, among others. But it was in 2011 that he and his wife really took an international leap of faith, traveling (and eating around) Europe and Africa for six months, then living in London for a year. In London, Leahy served as executive chef at Daylesford Organic, a restaurant that sources ingredients from its own farm. He brought back from abroad an even richer global perspective and a strengthened commitment to all things local and organic. Just down the road from PRFM, he opened his own restaurant, Saltyard, almost a year ago. Stop by the demo tent this Saturday to catch up with the chef!

Chef Demo with Zeb Stevenson
of Livingston & Proof and Provision
10:00 a.m. on 6/16
Chef Demos are sponsored by
Whole Foods Market
Chef Zeb Stevenson has been pretty busy since his PRFM demo last year…not only has he held it down at the Georgian Terrace’s cooler-than-cool LivingstonRestaurant, he’s  recently debuted Proof and Provision in the basement of the joint, too. And it’s one happenin’ joint. Zeb’s style of marrying local ingredients with contemporary American and international influences inspires both menus, with white tablecloths upstairs and “real fun” reinvented bar-bites downstairs. It’s a best of both worlds kind of thing, we’d say. And when he’s not busy in the kitchen(s), Zeb keeps his creative juices flowing as a musician, painter, coffee roaster, and cyclist. Stop by the demo tent this Saturday for his creative take on local + international: Thai Chicken Salad featuring pasture-raised poultry from Heritage Farms.

Spring Refresh

This week at PRFM…
TOMATOES! Just sayin’…

Chef Demo with Lara Creasy
of JCT., No. 246, & The Optimist
10:00 a.m. on 6/9
Chef Demos are sponsored by
Whole Foods Market
If you’ve enjoyed a delicious beverage at JCT. Kitchen & Bar, No. 246, or Westside’s newest hotspot The Optimist and its Oyster Bar, you’ve got master mixologist Lara Creasy to thank. We told you about her many accolades last year, but such a genius as Lara is constantly receiving more honors for her work crafting some of the freshest cocktails in the southeast. She currently serves as secretary for the Atlanta chapter of the U.S. Bartenders’ Guild and just completed her Certified Specialist of Wine course, receiving the highest exam score in her class. She’s drawn coastal inspiration for the bar program at Chef Ford Fry’s most recent debut, seafood restaurant The Optimist, including a clever martini of pink gin, blanc vermouth, and a garnish of smoked salmon. At The Oyster Bar, Lara features a daily punch with seasonal fruit served by the pitcher and “oyster backs” made to pair with daily raw bar specials. Her wine and beer list also feature coastal regions and port cities, meaning that a staycation is just a hop, skip, and a sip across midtown. You’ll want to swing by the demo tent this Saturday for a taste of the good life.

On WABE: Sweet Sounds of the Ice Cream Social

July is National Ice Cream Month and, while it is clearly our duty to enjoy a bowl or two of this frozen treat as often as time and pant sizes allow, it’s even better to have enjoyed 30 fantastic flavors at last month’s Ice Cream Social! The fourth annual event benefiting Slow Food Atlanta brought together top chefs and home cooks, one delicious bowl at a time. Take a listen to the sounds of this year’s Social here, originally aired on WABE’s City Café. Warning: side effects to listening include hand to spoon reflexes and frequent trips to your freezer or local ice cream purveyor.

Celebrate National Ice Cream Month and the Farmers Market by making up a batch of homemade ice cream, yogurt or sorbet, like this easy Blueberry Sorbet, made with fresh berries from the Market!
