So fresh and so fun

This week at PRFM…
Chef Demo with Zeb Stevenson
of Livingston & Proof and Provision
10:00 a.m. on 5/18
Chef Demos are sponsored by
COUNTRY Financial
Last year we told you all about Chef Zeb Stevenson’s creative cooking at the Georgian Terrace’s restaurants, Livingston and Proof and Provision. While word on the street is that he’s leaving the restaurants soon to pursue other “irons in the fire,” we’re sure his legacy of combining local ingredients with contemporary American and international influences will continue on at the midtown hotspots. Until we see Zeb in his next restaurant, we know we can spot him at PRFM each week where he buys his veggies as well as whole animals and wheels of cheese (you can always spot a chef at market); and he’ll keep his creative juices flowing as a musician, painter, coffee roaster, and cyclist. So be sure to stop by the demo tent this Saturday to ask him about any and all of that, and maybe see if there are tickets left for his “Last Supper” this Sunday.

Canning with Martha
8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Welcome back our canning expert Martha McMillin—she’ll be on hand all morning to share tasty spring canning recipes and answer all of your questions about home canning—yes, you (can) CAN!

Kids’ Corner – May 18 and 25
8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
PRFM is partnering with Elite Metro Sitters to provide child care during the May 18 and 25 markets. Elite sitters are insured, background-checked and CPR-certified, plus they’ll have some pretty fun crafts for your toddler to enjoy while you shop the market! Kids’ Corner is suitable for children ages two and up.

Chef Demo with Chris Hall
of Local Three
10:00 a.m. on 5/11
Chef Demos are sponsored by
COUNTRY Financial
Speaking of love…we love Chef Chris Hall. There, we said it (again). We can’t get enough of his cooking, which, with Local Three’s mantra, “People Matter Most, Local Is Priority, Seasonal Makes Sense, Authenticity Rules, Quality Governs, Delicious Trumps, Pretense Stinks, Comfort Feels Good, Appreciation Tastes Better, Prudence Sustains It All” is guaranteed to please. We’re sure this awesome motto has inspired Chris and partners Todd Mussman and Ryan Turner’s newest ventures, too: planning Common Quarter restaurant for East Cobb and working as consulting partners for Staplehouse. Chris is good people, y’all—don’t miss hanging with him this Saturday!

Reminder: TONIGHT!

Spring it on!

This week at PRFM…
Chef Demo with Craig Richards
of Ecco
10:00 a.m. on 5/4
Chef Demos are sponsored by
COUNTRY Financial
Chef Craig Richards wowed us at La Tavola Trattoria (he had us at Tomatofest) and continues to charm as executive chef of Ecco (fried goat cheese, honey, and black pepper, anyone?). And it’s no wonder others love him, too—with a culinary pedigree that began with Pachamama’s in Kansas, then training with the “first lady of Italian cuisine,” Lidia Bastianich, and working as executive chef at Lidia’s in Pittsburgh, Richards knows how to deliver fresh, crave-worthy dishes. That’s why we’re oh-so-glad his path led him to Atlanta and Fifth Group Restaurants. Also a devoted cookbook collector, you won’t want to miss Richards’ talents and tips this Saturday when he grills up the perfect spring salad!

A reason to say YEAH! on Monday…

Gettin’ (Villar)real

We’ve got a special chef demo lined up this week plus two new vendors for your enjoyment: Korean BBQ & kimchee from Simply Seoul and mozzarella cheese from Johnston Family Farm. It’s gettin’ real in the PRFM lot.

Chef Demo with Adrian Villarreal
of The Spence
10:00 a.m. on 4/27
Chef Demos are sponsored by
COUNTRY Financial
You’ve heard of Richard Blais? Check. You’ve heard of his buzzed-about restaurant The Spence? Check. Here’s the chef that cooks alongside Blais to bring Atlantans an ever-changing, whimsical menu inspired by what’s fresh now. Adrian Villarreal brings to the table family inspiration (from Mexico) and classic training (from Le Cordon Bleu Paris). Growing up he prepared large family meals with his grandmothers and great aunt, then worked part time at his uncle’s restaurant. After graduation in Paris, Villarreal gained experience at Le Doyenne and La Maree before heading to the U.S. for a show-stopping start as chef de partie with Atlanta’s much-acclaimed (and much-missed) Joël. He later worked as executive chef at TAP before joining Blais at The Spence. Check out his demo this Saturday and pick up a couple new tricks (we’ve heard he’s got a few up his sleeves).

Happy Birthday to Us

Peachtree Road Farmers Market is 6 years young. Celebrate with us this Saturday—we think you’ll like how we roll—cake, animals to pat, and a good ol’ round of Happy Birthday singing. Extra points if you get the animals to sing.

Also, you won’t want to miss a chef demo with one of our PRFM favorites…

Thomas McKeown of
Grand Hyatt Atlanta
10:00 a.m. on 4/20
Chef Demos are sponsored by
COUNTRY Financial
Maybe you’ve joined Chef Thomas on one of his super-fun market tours at PRFM. Maybe you’ve seen those happening and thought, “That chef is pretty cool and smart.” You thought right. He’s passionate about local and sustainable, putting his talents to work as executive chef of Grand Hyatt Atlanta’s Cassis restaurant. For more on Chef Thomas, check here. And don’t forget to stop by the demo tent this Saturday after you’ve had a nibble of birthday cake. That’s the perfect time to ask Chef T about hopping on a market tour this season, we think.

Reusable Bag Design Winners Revealed

COUNTRY Financial Reveals Reusable Bag
Design Contest Winner at Peachtree Road Farmers Market

Wondering how you’re going to tote your sprouts home from Peachtree Road Farmers Market? Have no fear! Thanks to Stephen Palmer, winner of the inaugural COUNTRY Financial reusable bag design contest, market shoppers will be able to carry their locally-grown goods in style.

The Benjamin E. Mays High School junior took first place and received a $1,000 scholarship from COUNTRY Financial. The design shows a peach rising over the city skyline, and according to the artist, “the peach is rising towards a better Georgia future.”

Lanier Doty, a senior at The Lovett School, and Abigail Shipps, a freshman at North Atlanta High School, were named runners-up. Each artist was awarded a $500 scholarship.

The winner and runners-up were announced at Peachtree Farmers Market kick-off event on Saturday, April 6. Shoppers can pick up this year’s limited edition reusable canvas bags at select events throughout the season.

“Our first bag design contest was a big success. This year’s theme sprouted great artistic creativity from our young designers. We were very impressed with the submissions and the talent of the Atlanta high school students,” says Dave Fisher, COUNTRY Georgia district director of agency.

COUNTRY became a season sponsor for Peachtree Road Farmers Market  earlier this year. Atlanta high school students submitted their designs for the first annual contest.

“Local food, local artists and a local business joining forces brings new and exciting reasons to visit the market,” says Lauren Carey, Peachtree Road Farmers Market manager. “It will be fun seeing Stephen’s design carried everywhere throughout the summer.”

To see the winning design and other finalists, please visit www.CountryFarmersMarkets.com.

This week at PRFM...

Chef Demo with Terry Koval
of Wrecking Bar Brewpub
10:00 a.m. on 4/13
Chef Demos are sponsored by
COUNTRY Financial
Professional skateboarder. That was Terry Koval’s first dream, one that led him to San Francisco from his home in Greenville, SC. Good thing for us he changed course in career—thanks to the California farm-to-table movement—and in location—heading back to the South and joining us here in Atlanta. He’s since worked at local favorites like Buckhead Diner, Canoe (with mentor Gary Mennie), and both Lobby and Room at TWELVE. PRFM fans of Farm Burger might be interested to know that Chef Koval was a creative force in conceptualizing those delicious grass-fed burgers—if you aren’t a fan, you just haven’t tried one yet—and was named by StarChefs.com as their 2012 Rising Star Sustainable Chef of Atlanta. He’s now bringing his love of all things local and seasonal to Wrecking Bar Brewpub, where his menu is accented by house-brewed craft beer and a revitalized historic building. He’s not just inspired at work, either—his family’s got four chickens at home (Puffy, Poppins, Snowflake, and Buttercup), so come ready with your fresh egg questions and don’t miss this Saturday’s demo!

What’s new since he visited with us last year? Oh, not much. Just a James Beard Award for Best Chef Southeast. Plus, world burger domination (ok, he’s launched the H&F burger at Turner Field, but world domination has to start somewhere). For more on Chef Hopkins, check here. Reusable Bag Design Contest

COUNTRY Financial and
Peachtree Road Farmers Market
Reusable Bag Design Contest

Artistic designs will sprout in the minds of Atlanta high school students as COUNTRY Financial and Peachtree Road Farmers Market launch their first reusable bag design contest. This year’s theme is “Sprouts in the City.”

Atlanta high school students are invited to use their creativity to show what Peachtree Road Farmers Market, and this year’s theme, “Sprouts in the City” means to them. Ideas can be inspired from farming, Atlanta landmarks, images from the farmers market and everything in between.

The student with the winning design will receive a $1,000 scholarship. In addition, his or her artwork will be showcased on thousands of reusable canvas bags distributed to farmers market shoppers throughout the season. The bag contest will supplement initiatives to reduce waste and promote recycling.

Two runners-up will receive a $500 scholarship and have their designs featured at the unveiling ceremony.

The winning designs will be unveiled on opening day of Peachtree Road Farmers Market on April 6. All three finalists will be invited to attend.

Rules, instructions, and entry form are located here. Entries must be submitted to the address below by March 8 at 5 p.m.:

1/9 Support Wholesome Wave at Whole Foods!

Shop at the West Paces Ferry, Ponce de Leon, or Briarcliff Whole Foods stores on Wednesday, January 9th to support Wholesome Wave, an important program that works with 13 farmers markets statewide (including PRFM) to support our local farmers, economy, and community by doubling the value of SNAP benefits (formerly food stamps) spent at local farmers markets. On January 9th, all three in-town Whole Foods stores will be donating 5% of their proceeds to Wholesome Wave, so plan on stopping by and stocking up!

A word of thanks

...from Market Manager Lauren Carey

As PRFM completes its 6th season, I'd like to say how much you mean to us.

To our shoppers:
Your farmers market continues to thrive because you show up in the rain, 8 months pregnant, with strollers filled with kids, when it's hot, with your dog, with out of town family, at a chef demo, kids activity or special Friday night Market. We are here each week because you are ready to try a new veggie or share a Swiss chard recipe while waiting to buy bread. Thank you for putting local food on your table each week. Our Saturday community is a place where kids grow up together and neighbors get to know each other. We thank you for supporting local!

To our sponsors:
Atlanta Falcons Youth Foundation, Captain Planet  Foundation, Ellis Hotel, Whole Foods, Wholesome Wave, Les Dames d'Escoffier Atlanta Chapter, and Southeastern Horticultural Society.  It is through the generosity and community focus of sponsors like you that we help to save the planet, empower people to eat well, teach the next generation, and make local food accessible to all Georgians.

To our vendors:
It has been another wonderful year. We welcomed new friends and sent others on the next step in their journey. You make the market vibrant, seasonal and alive. Thank you for sharing your talents!

To the volunteers:
With grace, hospitality, and always humor you make the market a happy place. With over 2,500 volunteer hours given this season, the Market could never happen without you. We all thank you for giving so much of yourselves week after week and year after year.

Save the date! Opening day 2013: April 6, 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Final 2012 Chef Demo
with Peter Dale of The National
10:00 a.m. on 12/8

Chef Demos are sponsored by

Whole Foods Market

Y'all know Hugh Acheson. Meet Hugh's Executive Chef from his Athens restaurant The National—Peter Dale. No, really, you should come meet him this Saturday. A UGA grad, Peter decided to pursue his culinary passion shortly after college. With family heritage from Ecuador and Greece, he had experienced a diverse array of cuisines and was ready to get his start in the field. He began as an apprentice at Hugh's Five & Ten restaurant, with plans to attend culinary school thereafter. Instead, he chose travel as his education and spent time in Europe (mostly Spain) where he found further inspiration and honed his skills. In 2007, Dale and Hugh opened The National, combining their interests in cooking, travel, and food politics. The daily-changing menu features ingredients from local farms and pairs the seasons of Georgia with the flavors of Spain, France, North Africa, Greece, the eastern Mediterranean, and Middle East. This weekend you don't have to travel around the world, or even to Athens, to get a taste for Peter's fantastic dishes—you just have to stop by Peachtree Road Farmers Market for our last demo of the season!

You won’t want to miss tips and tastes from Atlanta’s own farm-to-table visionary, Anne Quatrano. Together with her husband, award-winning chef Clifford Harrison, she operates six of Atlanta’s most celebrated restaurants including Bacchanalia, Floataway Café, Star Provisions, Provisions To Go, Quinones at Bacchanalia, and Abattoir. Her love for local, organic produce began at an early age, coming down from New England to visit her mother’s family farm Summerland, near Cartersville, Georgia. Anne is now the fifth generation to live on the farm and many of her restaurants’ ingredients are grown right there. Her meticulous attention to detail and pride in her ingredients results in true perfection. Join Anne this Saturday and learn how to wow all of your holiday guests!

We fell in love with Chef Joe Truex at Repast and followed him down Ponce and back up again to his recent post at Watershed. His culinary background includes training in New Orleans at Fairmont Hotel, graduating from The Culinary Institute of America in New York, working at the original Le Cirque under Chef Daniel Boulud, as well as stints in Basel, Switzerland and Las Vegas. We’re oh-so-glad that Chef Truex is now just a couple of blocks down from PRFM, bringing his knowledge of food and wine to bear on an ever-wonderful, ever-expanding Southern table.

When he’s not busy repping Southern food to the extreme and accepting praise from critics and fans alike, he’s planning another cookbook. We’re starting to think that fire in his belly comes with extra hours in the day, but we’re ok with it—more Kevin Gillespie hours = more tasty Southern love = balance restored to the universe just in time for the holidays.

Also this Saturday…

Also just in time for the holidays? For real: blood pressure, cholesterol, and BMI screenings, plus education on cardiovascular disease, stroke, and high cholesterol. Get your veggies & your check-up at the same time. It’s not even Thanksgiving and you’re multitasking like a pro. Boom.

3rd Annual Market Mash-up
Saturday, October 20
Silent Auction: 9:00–11:15 a.m.
Tasting: 10:00–11:00 a.m.
Last year’s Mash-up? Epic. This year’s Mash-up? It’s gonna be legen(wait for it)dary. Trilogies happen for a reason, after all. For the last two years, your favorite PRFM vendors have paired up to create some amazing dishes, and you won’t want to miss what they’ve got in store for you this year. Plus, the silent auction is back with some incredible lots—“all you can eat” courses with pairings from Local Three’s Chris Hall, anyone? Yes, please. The Market will be open as usual during the Mash-up, so come ready to shop, taste, and bid on great auction items! This fundraiser pays for PRFM’s city-of-Atlanta-required police officer—thanks in advance for helping us fund this part of the market so we don’t have to pass on the additional cost to our vendors by raising their fees. $5 tickets to taste all the dishes and vote for a favorite go on sale at 9:00 a.m. Celebrity food judges (Jennifer Zyman, Kim Severson, and Jenny Turknett) offer their comments plus shoppers’ and judges’ favorites will be announced at 11:00 a.m. After the silent auction closes at 11:15 a.m., PRFM will accept cash, check, debit card and Visa/MC for auction item payments.
