The Southern Table, Simply the Best

Chef Demo with Justin Burdett of
Miller Union
10:00 a.m. on 8/6
Chef Demos are sponsored by Whole Foods Market

Since its opening in November 2009, Miller Union (MU) has taken Atlanta by storm. A storm of fantastic, Southern farmstead food that is as purely beautiful on the plate as it is on the palate. And us Atlantans aren’t the only converts to co-owner and executive chef Steven Satterfield’s foodways—high falutin’ folks like The New York Times, Travel and Leisure, Bon Appétit, CNN Eatocracy, and Food and Wine would agree. When it opened, MU quickly ascended to “top new restaurant” status both in the city and in the nation—named by Esquire as one of the best new restaurants in 2010. Chef de Cuisine Justin Burdett has been with MU from the beginning and, simpatico with MU’s good food, Justin is good people. Raised on the traditions of Southern cooking, his family heritage and appreciation for his grandmother’s style in the kitchen inspired Justin to pursue a career in the culinary world. Prior to joining MU, he applied his serious love for Southern cuisine and a commitment to the local food movement to his roles at Asheville’s Nova and The Market Place, and also worked with Chef Hugh Acheson at Athens’ acclaimed Five & Ten restaurant. At Miller Union, Justin works with Chef Satterfield’s vision for a simple approach to farmstead-inspired cooking where braising, pickling, preserving and canning are often part of the process. Together, they update the restaurant’s menu daily, celebrating our farmers’ seasonal harvest. Justin lives in Stone Mountain with his wife and two-year old daughter; there, he enjoys spending time in his garden growing fresh lettuces, beets, and other vegetables for his family table. Recently, he made the family (and all of us) proud by winning Food Network’s “Chopped.” Join Team Justin this Saturday under the tent for a multiple course demo (he’s a winner, y’all), featuring melons, figs, eggplants, tomatoes, local meats, potatoes, herbs, honey, and a “put up” or two. You know, like you do at your house, right? After this demo, you will!
